On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people in the state were free, effectively enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation and marking the end of slavery in the United States. This event is commemorated as Juneteenth, according to the National Archives Museum (.gov).
